Stevens Masonry Celebrates 30 Years!

Stevens Masonry Celebrates 30 Years!

It’s common for a company to claim it has satisfied customers. It’s not so common that a company cannot only say – but also prove – a solid 30 years of happy, repeat clients.

That’s the earned reputation for Stevens Masonry Construction, Inc., of New Castle, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Stevens is known throughout eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania for its exceptional customer service based on integrity, honesty, and quality performance – a reputation that is well deserved, according to his customers.

“Stevens Masonry is very dependable and performs quality work from a professional crew. They also stand by their work and are easy to work with,” said Tim Palmer, project manager of the Erie, PA general contractor, Perry Construction Group. Stevens Masonry is working for Perry Construction at Edinboro University for elevator additions and renovations in Rose Hall.

It’s typical to see Stevens Masonry at high-profile institutional, industrial and commercial projects. Their resume includes corporate, healthcare, municipal, civic and education buildings. Accolades include a coveted Golden Trowel award from the International Masonry Institute for custom work completed at New Castle Junior/Senior High School.

Steve Caldararo, owner of Nick’s Auto Body in New Castle, has put Steven’s Masonry to work on projects for his company a half-dozen times over the last 15 years.

“Stevens Masonry is very easy to work with. If I ask for something, not only will they deliver, but they will often present ways to enhance the project,” Caldararo said. “This company does a good job with quality guys at a fair price.”

The General Contractor on the Nick’s Auto Body project is Giordano Construction, also based on New Castle. Vice President Thomas J. Giordano said: “Stevens Masonry has completed manyprojects for me, from plain block, split face block, intricate detailed brickwork, and structural repair/retrofit work, to stone veneer. They are a very well equipped company that can handle whatever job they take. I would like to congratulate them on their anniversary!”

Stevens Masonry has succeeded under the guidance of three generations. George W. Stevens founded the George W. Stevens construction company in 1926 and George C. Stevens carried on the family tradition. Next, Edwin C. and his wife, Esther established Stevens Masonry on May 2, 1986 and ran the shop before turning the reigns over to their sons, Edwin G. and George M. Stevens in 1992. George retired in 2010. Edwin and his wife, Jeananne, now co-own the company, with Ed serving as president and Jeananne as office manager.

The newest employee is pretty familiar with his new boss. Ed’s son, Dylan, will leverage his dual Thiel College degrees in Business Management and Human Resource Management as Steven Masonry’s Human Resource Consultant and Vice President of Operations.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my family for navigating the construction industry for 30 years,” Dylan said. “My mother and father busted their backs for countless hours. Even when times were tough they always pulled through because of their hard work and fantastic work ethic. I am so blessed to have parents that taught me how far hard work will get you, no matter what it is you do.”

Dylan, who has been a fixture at the company and by his dad’s side since age 7, assumed his job just one day after graduating from Thiel. He marks the fourth generation of Stevens to work at the family company. He will be involved in the day-to-day operations on and off the jobsites, and will have full responsibility of personnel management.

“I strongly believe that there are major contributors to the success of the business. The first being the personality of my father; he is very outgoing and gets along with everyone. He is always able to make anything work out. The second is honesty. Dad is the most honest man I know and I strive to be like him everyday. The third is hard work. When you work hard you are always rewarded. The fourth is reputation. Word of mouth is the key for us to get new customers and having a great reputation carries our company to the next level. The fifth is teamwork. We have a very strong and powerful team, being a small business we have fewer employees qualified in multiple areas of work. This is a major factor that plays a very important role in our quality services.”

Ed Stevens believes an unwavering commitment to satisfied customers and jobsite productivity and professionalism is another key to 30 years of success.

“We are truly grateful to God for the blessings and gifts He has given and continues to bless us with,” said Edwin. “First and foremost I am most grateful for my family, my father Edwin C., my late mother Esther, my daughter Ashlee, my son Dylan, my wife Jeananne and my entire family for their support, hard work and dedication that it takes to run a family business.

“We are also most grateful beyond words for our talented employees, Jacob Spor, project superintendent; Brian Forrester, labor foreman and operator; and John Decampli and all of our bricklayers and laborers. They are not just employees – they are Stevens Masonry!!

“We also thank our vendors and professional services partners, and most certainly our customers, who are truly a Godsend and an integral part of our company. Without their support, confidence and honesty, our company would not be successful,” Edwin added.

“Business, in my opinion, is a team effort and a two-way street: Treat others the way you wish to be treated – with respect, humility and honesty – and you will receive your efforts back, 100-fold, in many ways,” Edwin explains.

Thomas Giordano, another long-time customer, agrees. “I would highly recommend Stevens Masonry. The workmanship and performance is excellent. I enjoy my relationship with Ed and my father did business with his father many years ago as well,” said Giordano, Vice-President of Giordano Construction Co. Inc., a successful general contractor based in New Castle, PA.

“An impressive asset his company has is his ability to work well with others,” added Gary Pezzuolo, President of G.P. Construction of Edinburg, PA. “Ed is hardworking, honest, and his employees are excellent.
